Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid (PBSA)

Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid

PBSA is a highly effective UVB absorber that absorbs UV light between 280-340 nm to protect skin from sunburn. It is used in broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective daily cosmetics. Due to its water solubility, it is suitable for use in sun care applications without oils and exceeding the contents of oil. This grade is used in combination with UV filters like avobenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. It is suitable for water-based transparent sunscreen products such as gels or clear sprays.

Activeman Specialities Pvt Ltd is a leading manufacturer and supplier of Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA) which is used as a water-soluble UV-B filter in sun-care and cosmetic preparations when converted into a salt.

Solubility: PBSA is supplied as the free acid. It is insoluble in water. After conversion to a salt, the product is soluble in water and mixtures of water and ethanol. Therefore, in order to prevent crystallization, care must be taken to neutralize the acid properly and completely with a suitable base, to ensure that no free acid is present. It is recommended to prepare an aqueous pre-mix then neutralize with a suitable base such as NaOH, KOH, Tris, AMP, Tromethamine or Triethanolamine. Compatible with most cosmetic ingredients, and should be formulated at a pH >7 to prevent crystallization. It has an excellent photostability and safety profile. Since it leaves a dry touch on the skin, CATASHIELD 1232 UV is recommended for sunscreens such as gels or clear sprays and light feel day care products.
